Sunday, September 15 - Today we fly to Europe!

Our much delayed trip to Europe will start today as we leave DFW to fly to Frankfurt.

We'll endeavor to post pictures and comments on this blog as we travel through Germany, Slovenia, Italy and France. You'll find our itinerary with links to our accommodations below.

9/15 - Arrive Frankfurt, pick up rental car and drive to just south of Munich in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps. Overnight at Gasthof Hotel Dannerwirt.

9/16 - It's on to Slovenia with a stop in Salzburg. We'll stay 3 days in Apartments Jansa near Lake Bled and plan to hike around Lake Bled, visit the capital Ljubljana and Lipica where they breed and raise the famous Lippizanner stallions.

9/20 - We'll journey on to Venice where we've rented a small apartment in a rather grand house on the River Brenta, just a few km from Venice. We'll use this as our base to visit Venice as well as Bologna.

9/23 - Lake Como! Can't wait to see this beautiful lake from the Villa Maria B & B in Lierna, across the lake from Bellagio.

9/25 - We head south to the Italian Riviera and the Cinque Terre where we'll stay in Lerici, take the ferry to explore the towns of Cinque Terre and hike along the hillside trails between them.

9/27 - Only one night a Mas de Sentes as we break our trip from Italy to the Languedoc region of France where we'll spend a week in a gite.

9/28 - Bize-Minervois, our home for the next week as we explore the south of France and even a little bit of northern Spain.

10/5 - Overnight in a small B & B near Beaune in Burgundy. Looking forward to tasting some fine wine!

10/6 - Back to Germany where we'll spend a couple of days in a gasthaus on the Main River, take trips to Heidelberg, Stuttgart and Wurzburg so Peter can indulge his taste for German beer and sausage.

10/9 - Back in Frankfurt to catch our plane home.

  1. Salzburg - ride up to the HohenSalzburg castle, look at the cemeteries and churches at the base. Wonderful Rococco.

Venezia - MUST SEE! the Doges' Palace

Beaune - the Hospital is worth it. Then pick a wine cave - there are quite a few. Pretty town.

    1. Thanks anon! Started to walk up to HohenSalzburg castle just as it started pouring down rain. Did enjoy the old buildings in the city center, though.

Tomorrow is Lippizanner stallion stud farm and then a quick side trip to Umag, Croatia. We'll be in Venice over the weekend and will take your advice.

Beaune seems eons away at this point!
